I won! I won! I won!
The only physical activity I won in my life were spelling bees in elementary school, in which we had to write the correctly spelled word up on the chalkboard. Last night, at 48 years old, I added another physical activity win: aquajogging.
So maybe it wasn’t actually a competition, ok I’ll give you that. Heehee. But we were doing the Robo-schritt (the robot walk) , which is a very hard step. You have to walk the length of the pool while shuffling your feet back and forth in the water. You’re floating, of course, wearing your aquajogging belt.
To mimic this step on dry land, stand up straight, feet together. Now move forward, sliding one foot along the floor until the heel of that foot is about even with the toes of the other foot. Then slide the other foot to the same relative position.
This can be very difficult in the water, because it’s hard to move forward. On top of that, we had kickboards in our hands, had to hold them on either side, like you hold a steering wheel, and move the board forward and back in the water.
I was SO focused on my exercise, thanks to my practice in the past few weeks, that I didn’t notice I pulled away from the others. When I made the turn for the lap, I was very surprised to see everyone else at least 1/3 of the way behind me. We all looked at each other and laughed. It was a great feeling, because several people have one stride that they are really great at, and I’m happy to have one for me too.
BTW, the scale showed over 45 pounds lost this morning.
My positives:
- I am so proud of myself for having practiced aquajogging, because it made my regular class so much fun
- I love how I made my practice sessions become a second safe place, in addition to the sofa
- My self-esteem has picked up from the positive self-talk so much that I’ve arranged a get-together for people this weekend
- Certain chores are becoming second nature
- I’m thinking I’ll write a few useful affirmations and actually say them regularly for a while
